Travel by train to Germany
Munich is very easy to reach by train. From most major cities in Germany and even beyond, Munich can be reached by train every hour during the day. Munich-Central-Station is very centrally located, and all other destinations in the city as well as the conference venue can be reached by public transport in about 10-15 minutes. Since one of the topics of this year’s 3E is ‘Responsible’ consider taking a train ride and enjoy the beautiful landscapes on your way to Munich.
Travel by car
Many highways lead to Munich. From the north A9 (from Nuremberg), from the northwest A8 (from Augsburg), from the southwest A96 (from Lindau), from the south A95 (from Garmisch), from the southeast A8 (from Chiemsee, Austria, Italy), east A94 (from Passau), from the northeast A92 (from the airport, Landshut).
Those arriving by car should bear in mind that parking spaces in the city center of Munich are very expensive and scarce. Limited parking is available at the conference venue.
Travel by plane
Munich Airport (Franz-Josef-Strauß-Airport) is located about 45 minutes outside of Munich on the A92 highway. Two train lines (S1 and S8) run to the airport.
A single journey on the S-Bahn for the approximately 35 km route to the city center is about €14 (Stripe ticket), an Airport City Day ticket (for any number of journeys per day on public transport currently costs €15.50). There are ticket machines at the airport/S-Bahn platform, but you can buy tickets quickly and easily in the MVG GO app, which you can also use for public transport in Munich.
The ticket machines in Munich are easy to use. They accept cash (including bills) and EC cards. There are ticket machines at practically every stop. On trams and buses, you will also find machines in the vehicles. Tickets for the metro and subway must be purchased before entering the platforms and validated before entering the platform. By cab, the journey from the airport to the city costs around 90 euros and takes just as long as the S-Bahn: around 40 – 45 minutes.
There is also the Lufthansa Express Bus from the airport to the city center (similar prices to the S-Bahn). At night, night buses and especially trams run in the city center. The U-Bahn and many S-Bahn lines do not run during the week from around 1 a.m. to 4.30 a.m., while the U-Bahn closes at around 2 a.m. at weekends. Subject to change.
We recommend visiting the Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft website or downloading the MVG GO app.
